Cheap Nice Accomodations/Hotels in Hongkong

Hong Kong is known as one of the more expensive cities in Asia, behind perhaps only Tokyo and Singapore in price. Having traveled in extremely expensive places like Australia and Switzerland, I would argue that Hong Kong is actually pretty cheap in general — but that’s a topic for another article. The point is that you can find inexpensive things everywhere you travel if you look hard enough and thankfully, when it comes to cheap Hong Kong hotels and guest houses, you don’t have to look very far. If you travel to Hong Hong and are in need of a cheap, centrally-located place to stay, search no further than Chungking Mansions in the Tsim Sha Tsui section of Kowloon. Photos of Chungking House, Hong Kong
This photo of Chungking House is courtesy of TripAdvisor

What Is Chungking Mansions?
Chungking Mansions is located in Tsim Sha Tsui, the heart of Kowloon “Chungking Mansions” is the name given to a 17-story building located in Hong Kong’s Kowloon area, the northern and most residential of the two “lobes” that comprise the city proper. Although more than 4,000 permanent residents call the building home, Chungking Mansions also houses restaurants, currency exchanges, convenience shops — and the largest number of guest houses of any single building in Hong Kong. Chungking Mansions is specifically reputed to have more than 1,980 guest house rooms, which are also among the cheapest hotel and guest house rooms in Hong Kong. For this reason perhaps more than any other, Chungking Mansions has become a destination for backpackers and budget travelers in a city that isn’t big on hostels. Although Chungking Mansions (like the rest of Hong Kong) is crowded, it isn’t roomy, at all — its footprint is more befitting of a San Francisco rowhouse than a New York skyscraper. This is evident perhaps nowhere more than the fact that only two elevators (each of which are weight restricted to fit 3-5 adults) service the entire building. Ouch!

Where Is Chungking Mansions? Chungking Mansions is a quick ferry ride away from exciting Hong Kong island Of course, the cheap price of hotel and guest house rooms at Chungking Mansions isn’t the only reason it’s found such popularity among backpackers and budget travelers. Chungking Mansions not only provides Hong Kong travelers with a cheap place to stay, but also a location even high rollers would envy. To get to Chungking Mansions, take the Hong Kong MRT to the Tsim Sha Tsui station. After you exit, Chungking Mansions is located literally across Nathan Road. Nathan Road is an enviable area in and of itself — you can experience literally a whole world of dining, cheap electronics and clothing shopping and great city views there. Chunking Mansions is also an optimal hub for making connections to other areas of Hong Kong. Catch the Star Ferry from Kowloon to swankier, more cosmpolitan Hong Kong island, which is where you get a China visa if you need one. Additionally, it’s just a few metro stops away from Mong Kok, one of more popular shopping areas in Hong Kong.

Guest Houses at Chungking Mansions The narrow footprint of Chungking Mansions ensures a tight fit Since Hong Kong doesn’t have many “hostels” (as Western travelers would think of them), guest houses are usually the best option for budget travelers to Hong Kong. Chungking Mansions does house some proper hotels, but there is not much discernable difference in quality between more expensive hotels and cheaper guest houses — just book a guest house. I can personally recommend the New Peking Guest House, which is where I stayed when my friend Dora and her cousin Rick came to China to see me. When it comes to guest houses in Hong Kong, accommodation is like a hotel in that you have a private room with an ensuite bathroom, but like a hostel in that furnishings are extremely basic. One advantage of staying at New Peking Guest House is that several of its rooms are located along the front of the Chungking Mansions building. This vantage point affords you amazing aerial views of street scenes below, particularly at night.

Prices at Chungking Mansions Prices seem high? Keep in mind that $1 buys you almost HK$8 Speaking of price, prices do vary, depending on which guest house you eventually settle on, how many people you have and which particular room you choose. When I visited Hong Kong in June 2011, my friends and I paid HK$340 (about $44) per night for our private room with ensuite bathroom at New Peking Guest House. Prices for other guest houses in Chunking Mansions may be slightly higher or lower. To get an idea of what you might pay at New Peking Guest House, do a query for the dates you plan to travel to Hong Kong on the New Peking Guest House HostelWorld page. Aren’t convinced you should stay at New Peking Guest House? Try your luck on Google with a query of “Chungking Mansions guest house booking.” One piece of advice before you arrive in Hong Kong: The base of Chungking Mansions is literally infested with hustlers, who are itching to take your money. They will tell you any lie that can, be it that your guest house is closed or even that they are the guest house owner, to get you to come with them. This is why, although I don’t always recommend doing so, it is imperative that you book a guest house before arriving in Hong Kong, and head straight to your guest house after you enter the Chungking Mansions building. Travel Advisory Chinese airport security beefed up, expect delays china expat

Domestic airports have enhanced security measures after a disabled man set off a bomb on Saturday at Beijing Capital International Airport.

Explosives checks are being carried out at the entrances of the arrival and departure halls at the airport, with security personnel swiping palm-sized testing paper on passengers' luggage.

SWAT officers have been deployed in the halls, Beijing police announced on Sunday, and police dogs have also been deployed.

The anti-explosive measures came after an incident on Saturday evening when Ji Zhongxing, 34, set off a homemade bomb at the Beijing airport, injuring himself and a security guard.

Ji, from Heze, Shandong province, claimed in his blog that he had been attacked and paralyzed by police in Dongguan, Guangdong province, in 2005, and his lawsuit against the police failed in 2006.

The explosion occurred outside Gate B of the Terminal 3 arrival hall, where people don't need security checks.

Beijing police said on Sunday that Ji had been taken into custody and they were investigating how he got the explosives, what his motives were and whether there were any other suspects.

Airports in many other cities, including Shanghai and Shenzhen, have also upgraded security measures.

Shanghai's Pudong and Hongqiao international airports have been checking for explosives at exits and entrances since Sunday, according to the Shanghai Airport Authority, which operates the airports.

"It's a spot check not only for the departure floor, but also the arrival floor - you'd be checked even if you're in the airport to pick up friends," said a staff member of the Pudong International Airport's inspection center who declined to give his name.

Shi Daoxiong, spokesman for Shenzhen Airport (Group) Co, operator of Shenzhen Baoan International Airport, said the inspection only takes a few seconds.

"The inspection is a regular part of instructions from the Civil Aviation Administration of China. We used to run the check three days every month," he said.

Shi still advises passengers to arrive at the airport about half an hour earlier.

Starting on Monday, passengers at Sanya Phoenix International Airport in Hainan province have to go through extra security checks at the entrances of domestic and international terminals, the airport said on Monday morning.

Some entrances will be closed temporarily, and all others will be for one-way traffic, the Sanya airport said.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China required beefing up security measures, the airport said, reminding passengers to arrive ahead of time.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China was unavailable for comment on Monday.

Sun Ying, traveling from Beijing to Shanghai, said the enhanced security measures made her feel safe.

"The testing paper is efficient, and it doesn't take much time," she said. "Safety should always be the top priority."

Why Is The Royal Baby Named George

By naming their son George Alexander Louis, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have picked a name which is synonymous with British kings.
Here we will look at the significance of British fu-ture king’s names. George
The name George is synonymous with British kings. Six King Georges have worn the crown throughout history since the German-born George I, the first Hanoverian king of Great Britain, acceded to the throne in 1714.
The first name of the last King George –George VI –was actually Albert and he was known to his family as ‘Bertie’ but he selected George – his fourth name – to use as Sovereign. He was the much-loved father of the present Queen and the new Prince George of Cambridge’s great-great grandfa-ther.
George is also the fourth name of the Prince of Wales –the baby’s grandfather. Even Edward VIII had George among his seven names. The name means farmer or earth worker. It was the 12th most popular name for boys born in England and Wales in 2011.
St George, a fourth-century Christian martyr, is the patron Saint of England and represents honour, bravery and gallantry. The legend of George slaying a dragon and rescuing an innocent maiden is me-dieval.
There has only been one other Prince of Cam-bridge and he was also called George. The first Prince George of Cambridge was a grandson of George III and the only son of Prince Adolphus Frederick, the 1st Duke of Cambridge.
Prince George of Cambridge was born in 1819 and went on to become the 2nd Duke of Cambridge after his father’s death.
The Duke was in the Army and served in the Crimean War. He was promoted to Comman-der-in-Chief in 1887 and an equestrian statue of him stands in the middle of London’s Whitehall. He was said to have been a disciplinarian, who believed Army promotions should be based on social connec-tions rather than ability.Alexander
This is popular in Scotland, where Alexander III was regarded as one of the country’s greatest rulers. In April this year, Willem-Alexander was sworn in as King of the Netherlands after the abdication of his mother, Queen Beatrix.Louis
This name has deep significance in the Windsor family in honour of the Prince of Wales’s favourite uncle Lord Louis Mountbatten, who was killed by the IRA in 1979. Louis is the last of William’s three middle names. (Daily Mail)

Brad Pitt's Movie Set-Trailer Has All the Comforts of Home

Ever wondered how Brad Pitt lives during filming? Well, take a look at this! The new season of Celebrity Motor Homes got a sneak peek at Pitt's million-dollar movie trailer – including his master bedroom, which features a queen-sized bed! "Are you kidding me? This thing's bigger than my apartment," says stunned show star Drew Waters as he steps into the 48-ft.-long trailer on the first episode of the new season (premiering Wednesday, July 17, at 9 p.m. ET). The father-of-six has a luxury home away from home when he's on the set of his movies, and the trailer is equipped with everything Pitt (and his fiancée Angelina Jolie and their kids) could need. Featuring four extra-large pullouts that give it even more room for the Jolie-Pitt crew, the trailer has a chef's kitchen that cost more than $60,000, with a full-size fridge and a dishwasher. The living room features a 10-ft.-long leather sofa, big enough for at least four kids to stretch out on, and a big TV that's perfect for playing video games. The master bedroom is a neutral-toned oasis that has two bathrooms, including a walk-in shower for two, and plenty of room for the family and Pitt's hair and makeup team. The first episode of the show – which airs on Great American Country – also features a tour of singer Jake Owen's lavish tour bus. That boasts its own walk-in closet, beer on tap, six bunks, a master bedroom and a baby crib, while the pregame hangout of the Dallas Cowboys also features rare football artifacts and huge plasma-screen TVs on every wall.

Angelina Jolie Tops Forbes's List of Highest-Paid Actresses

When it comes to earnings, Angelina Jolie is Hollywood's queen. Forbes has named Jolie, 38, the highest-earning actress from June 2012 to June 2013, even though she hasn't starred in a major film in three years and took time off for her elective double mastectomy. The magazine released its list of highest-paid actresses on Monday and credits Jolie's star turn in the upcoming film Maleficent for helping her secure the top spot, with an impressive $33 million in overall entertainment-related earnings.
(Forbes estimates she took home at least $15 million for the role.)

The Disney film, a retelling of the classic Sleeping Beauty story from the perspective of the evil queen (played by Jolie), hits theaters next summer and marks her first return to a big-budget film since appearing alongside Johnny Depp in The Tourist in December 2010. Jolie beat out recent Best Actress Oscar winner Jennifer Lawrence for the top spot by a wide margin.

Forbes estimates Lawrence took home about $26 million in the past year, but with plenty of room to grow: the next installment in The Hunger Games franchise is set for release in November. Kristen Stewart came in third with $22 million, and is still cashing in on the Twilight series, although the magazine wonders for how much longer. RELATED: Angelina Jolie Photographed Scouting Film Locations in Hawaii Jennifer Aniston came in fourth with $20 million, and reportedly takes pay cuts to appear in films like We're The Millers and Horrible Bosses, which it says seems to appeal to her fun, comedic side. Rounding out the top ten are Emma Stone, Charlize Theron, Sandra Bullock, Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis and Julia Roberts.

China News Doctor probed for baby trafficking scandal

A doctor is under investigation for infant trafficking in Fuping county, Northwest China's Shaanxi province, Chinese Business View reported. The doctor surnamed Zhang is suspected of trading new born babies at a maternal and child health care hospital in Fuping county after a baby boy went missing on July 18. It is said that Zhang asked the parents to "give up the boy" with a fake test report showing the mother had syphilis and hepatitis, which would infect the baby and "bring huge economic pressure" to the family. The baby's father, surnamed Lai, who has just graduated from primary school, said he believed the doctor and signed his name on the delivery record as he was too nervous and confused. The record said the baby had deformity, which was not mentioned by doctor Zhang earlier. The baby was reportedly removed before the mother could see him. "Zhang said the baby had infectious disease and I shouldn't get close to him," the father said. "I only looked at him through the delivery room and kept taking care of my wife. After that she said the baby had been disposed and we never see him." The mother of the baby, surnamed Dong, was proved to have no virus after a check at another hospital. And Zhang has not been seen since. The family has been questioning the hospital and reported to the police. As of August 1, seven similar cases have been reported at the hospital involving Zhang. Police in Fuping have confirmed the case as a group trans-provincial child trafficking. Three people have been arrested and doctor Zhang is under investigation.

Snowden granted 1 year's temporary asylum in Russia

Snowden granted 1 year's temporary asylum in Russia MOSCOW - Fleeing US intelligence whistleblower Edward Snowden has received temporary asylum in Russia for one year, and has moved to a safe place, a lawyer assisting him said Thursday. Kucherena said the documents allowed Snowden to move freely within Russia and the former intelligence contractor had left the transit zone for a location that would not be disclosed. "I hope you will treat this vague information with understanding ... the safety issue is a very serious one for him," the lawyer said. The FMS confirmed the granting later in the day. "One of the district subdivisions of the Federal Migration Service Department for the Moscow region has decided to grant Mr. Snowden the status of temporary asylum," FMS spokesperson Zalina Kornilova told local media, adding the Snowden case was nothing special. "I emphasize that this is not a unique case, so, over a thousand people applied to district subdivisions in 2013 alone, so far," Kornilova said. Snowden's whereabouts after leaving the transit zone remain a mystery. According to Kucherena, Snowden would choose where he lived. "He can either live in a hotel or rent a flat," Kucherena said. Currently, Snowden had no "immediate plan" to fly to Latin America, Kucherena said, adding the former US spy agency contractor would stay in touch with his family. "I am finishing paperwork on the invitation to his father. He will come and we will be able to discuss all issues personally," the lawyer told a local TV station. On Wednesday, Snowden's father, Lon Snowden, said in an interview with a Russian news channel he hoped his son could find protection in Russia, and he would come to Moscow. Snowden arrived at Moscow's Sheremetyevo international airport on June 23, and has reportedly been stranded in the transit zone since then as his passport was revoked by his government. He faces espionage charges after disclosing a classified intelligence surveillance project code-named PRISM. President Vladimir Putin, calling Snowden "a transit passenger" who had arrived in Russia without invitation, has repeatedly said Moscow is not going to harm its relations with Washington, and that Snowden must handle his affairs "without our involvement." According to the president, the relationship between Russia and the United States "is more important than any intelligence scandal." Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov said Thursday Moscow was aware of the atmosphere created in United States over Snowden, but had not received "any signals" regarding the cancelation of US President Barack Obama's visit to Russia in September. Local experts said the possible impact of the event on Russia-US ties was foreseeable, as Snowden would have crossed the Russian border sooner or later. The US was unlikely to take any steps that would seriously harm bilateral ties, they said.
